Sir John Akomfrah to Represent Great Britain at the Venice Biennale 2024

Sir John Akomfrah, one of today’s most celebrated filmmakers, has been chosen to represent Great Britain at the next Venice Biennale. While details about his pavilion are scarce at this time, it will be one of the most anticipated national exhibitions at the 2024 Venice Biennale. This is partly because of his stature within the art world; he has proven influential for multiple generations of artists in the U.K. and beyond, and was knighted at the start of this year. Additionally, the British Pavilion took home top honors in 2022 with Sonia Boyce winning Best Artist at the exhibition’s awards ceremony.

Sir John Akomfra was born in Ghana in 1957 and later emigrated to Great Britain as a young child. He is not a stranger to the Venice Biennial having participated twice in past iterations. Sir Akomfrah is know for his lush multi channel films and his work as a member of the Black Audio Film Collective.
