BLACK, A Group Exhibition Opens February 16

The KNOW Contemporary in partnership with Artsy, the leading global online marketplace present BLACK, a group exhibition curated by visual artist and founder of The KNOW Contemporary, Knowledge Bennett and author and art historian Charles Moore. The exhibition features paintings, mixed-media works and sculpture by 10 of today’s leading emerging contemporary Black artists. The exhibit runs from February 16-20, 2022 with an opening reception on February 16th, 6-9PM.

One of the first and most widely used pigments by humans to express themselves, the color black has come to denote many things to different cultures throughout time. Be it death, mourning or darkness, elegance, wealth or power, Black has come to symbolize a variety of ideas.

BLACK, the exhibition, examines the multiplicity of ways artists employ its color to convey intriguing visual concepts. Participating artists, working across various media include Patrick Alston, Anthony Olubunmi Akinbola, Knowledge Bennett, Lindsey Brittain Collins, Ryan Cosbert, Kim Dacres, Muna Malik, Ashanté Kindle, Ronnie Robinson, and Paul Anthony Smith.

In addition to BLACK, The KNOW Contemporary will host a panel discussion in partnership with Lightwork, a creative media platform working at the intersection of art, education, and culture featuring Knowledge Bennett, Muna Malik, Lindsey Brittain Collins, and Rebecka Jackon, moderated by Folasade Ologundudu, the founder of Lightwork. The panel, Art & Activism: Points of Intersection, will address each artist’s work and practice and the ways in which they contend with issues of social justice, addressing the times in which we live and the importance of keeping history alive. The panel will be held on Saturday February, 19th from 2-3PM.

This partnership between The Know Contemporary and Artsy takes place throughout Black History Month during Frieze Week LA. “Artsy is the ideal partner to expand the digital reach of the gallery. As technology increases the accessibility of art, Artsy provides today’s artists and galleries alike with tools to engage a global audience,” said Knowledge Bennett.
