When Art Basel arrived in Miami Beach in 2001, collectors, jet-setters, visual artists, curators and administrators, and lovers of all-things-cultural on South Beach, flooded the area and satellite locations. Now, close to two decades later, every gallery, artist, and non-profit wants a part of the weekend! That is a positive thing. Art Basel Miami Beach/Miami Art Week brings no less than 13 million dollars to the Miami-Dade County economy while providing a platform for over 4,000 artists to exhibit and perform. The palpable energy of the highly anticipated arts week encourages people to enjoy art in traditional and non-traditional ways.
Our favorite part of Art Basel Miami Beach/Art Miami Week is the representation of Black artists from the African diaspora: Haiti, the United States, Ghana, Nigeria, France, Brazil, Jamaica, and Cuba – to name a few. You will find these artists in Miami Beach and the surrounding cities exhibiting their work and performing. This year, you can party with Virgil Abloh and view the work of Afro-Cuban artist Alexandre Arrechea. The amount of artwork by late-career and early career artists is vast and requires some research and planning if you want to experience everything the diaspora has to offer.
With an event bursting with small and significant exhibits, this guide gives you everything you need to find artists of African descent. You will be able to explore Miami neighborhoods that have an exciting history and support the local Black Miami art scene, as well as larger fairs in commercial districts with our map below.

Art Basel Miami Beach kicked off the art fair in South Florida. This years gallery line up is primarily the same, but the featured artists are some of the contemporary art stars to watch such as Zina Saro-Wiwa, Billie Zangewa, Tschabalala Self, Kapwani Kiwanga, Joyce J. Artists will compete in a 3 round live painting elimination contest. Each artist will be provided with an easel and a canvas and painting materials. During the event, there will be a live DJ, body painting showcase and live performances. Food trucks will be outside the venue and beverages will be sold inside. A panel of judges plus crowd participation will decide who will be eliminated each round. The grand prize winner will receive $500 in cash and prizes.

The Ellies Award winning project, Water Rights is an open-ended examination of the African diaspora’s relationship to water – as black bodies are still policed at the beach and swimming pools, and climate gentrification is aggressively reshaping historically black neighborhoods west of the coast and the Caribbean islands.
Water Rights, a project by photographer Johanne Rahaman, will be publicly exhibited during Art Basel through the streets of Miami – the images will be projected from a moving LED truck, which will tour the areas of Wywood, Overtown, and South Beach.

Darker Gods in The Garden of The Low Hanging Heavens will mark the first exhibition by post-disciplinary artist Damon Davis during Art Basel Miami Beach. Davis uses sound, photography, film, illustration and the written word to construct new mythologies around the troupes and cultural ideas of Blackness. Davis explores the function of narrative and its effects on identity and belief systems in communities of color by creating modern myths and fables. Darker Gods is the story of 13 deities that rule over a parallel universe. The garden is a gateway where our world and their world meet. At this intersection are fantasies of Blackness reminiscent of Yoruba and Greek mythology.

Charo Oquet’s “Miami Rara” is a unique work that integrates installation with music, dance and costuming. It presents performance art as situated within, and in dialog with, the neighborhood it is located within. Taking its form from the Dominican/Haitian Gaga/Rara carnival tradition, which has a common heritage with Afro-Cuban and African American carnival traditions, “Miami Rara” mainly serves as a meeting place for the audience to interact with Miami’s pan-Caribbean heritage and communities.

Family Association Foundation, a premier global membership organization for ultra-high-net-worth families, will host a “Master Class with the Artists,” a private, behind-the-scenes art affair with notorious American counterfeiter-turned-artist, Arthur J. Williams, Jr., and 18-year-old “Fresh Prince of Street Art” painter, Skyler Grey, at The Fontainebleau Hotel Miami Beach on December 7th from 4-5 p.m.. Proceeds from the event will benefit the South Florida chapter of After-School All-Stars, a national non-profit organization founded by Arnold Schwarzenegger to help low-income children in schools across the United States.

This December Brickell City Centre (BCC), Miami’s newest urban shopping epicenter, will host FREE!, an alternative, non-commercial contemporary art fair poised to be a historic convergence of some of the world’s most recognized and pioneering artists. Made possible by Swire Properties Inc, FREE! will present an intersectional group of artists creating site-specific interventions in a non-traditional venue. FREE! runs concurrently with Art Basel Miami Beach from December 6-9, 2018, after a special first view preview on Black Friday, November 23rd.
Miami-based cultural producer Anthony Spinello, founder of gallery and creative house Spinello Projects, conceptualized FREE! with investigations into nominal concepts of race, gender, nationality, sexuality, and religion through experiential and participatory installations, video and performance. Borders and divisions, both physical and ideological, are explored by these artists. Lines are endlessly drawn, redrawn, erased and replaced in an effort to create deep rifts in our society and culture – and yet lines may also be wires, threads, streams and scars which can activate, bind, and bring us together. The Little Haiti Cultural Complex and the Haitian Cultural Arts Alliance (HCAA) present the work of Haitian artist Emmanuel Merisier. Drawing influence from European modernism, Haitian art, and popular culture, Merisier presents a unique oeuvre that explores the spiritual and the modern. Merisier, born 1929, combined bright colors, alluring figures, and a propensity of symbols and markings. His work breached a new frontier within Haitian art. Drawing from the collection of the Waterloo Center for the Arts in Iowa, the 10th iteration of the HCAA’s Global/Borderless Caribbean exhibition series focuses on the work of this under-recognized artist, positioning Haitian painting within a global modernist tradition. Hampton Art Lovers will highlight and exhibit Hampton University Museum’s extensive Elizabeth Catlett collection of works on paper. One of the most influential artists of the 20th century, known primarily as a printmaker and sculptor, Catlett is acclaimed both for her technical brilliance and the emotional impact of her work. Proud of her African American heritage Catlett made compassionate, heroic images of ordinary people. Catlett’s work expresses the themes of injustice, black women as figures of strength, and the mother and child bond. With so many artists, events and exhibitions here for Miami Art Week and Art Basel, Let There Be Reggae is a unique event showcasing a curated snapshot of Reggae music and Dancehall culture.
The two-night exhibition will begin with an opening reception on Thursday, December 6th, from 6 – 10 p.m., in the Wynwood Art District of Miami. Let There Be Reggae will feature exhibits from the founder of VP Records, Patricia Chin; Israeli artists Ranking Levy and Ellen G; Jamaican dancer Maria Hitchins and photographer Jik-Reuben. The cover illustration of Let There Be Reggae 2018 was created by Australian based artist Robin Clare. An Art Exhibition on Reggae music would not be complete without musical guests. In 2017, legendary singer Freddie McGregor and legendary selector and artist Tony Matterhorn performed a set for the opening night.
The Opening Reception on Thursday, December 6, 2018, is featuring VP Recording artist Christopher Martin, legendary sound selector of Renaissance Disco – DJ Delano and Miami’s Eccentrix Sound.

The festival features the 4th annual Now or Neverland art exhibit: Ode To Hip Hop which pays homage to the genre’s significant influence in music, art, literature, and politics. The festival also includes film screenings, artists talks, and nightly artsy kickbacks throughout Little Haiti.

The University of the Arts in Philadelphia will host the ultimate art experience at the National Hotel. Some of the school’s top artists alums will fuse the arts through moving-image installations, contemporary art pieces, photography, and musical performances throughout the hotel from December 5-9th. The Miami Art Week experience will include a neon video installation on the hotel’s roof by contemporary American artist Stephen “ESPO” Powers, best known for his transition of graffiti writing into street art and text-based conceptual works. Meanwhile, dynamic duo Nadia Hironaka and Matthew Suib will showcase their collaborative large-scale, immersive moving-image installations using original imagery and unique soundtracks to create colorful video projections that explore history, cultures, and conventions. In the interior of the hotel, visitors can enjoy photography by internationally renowned African-American artist, photographer, writer, and educator Dr. Deborah Willis. Her works are grounded in making and studying photographs that reflect personal and collective memories of beauty. The hotel will host a free Public Preview Party on December 6th from 8 p.m. to midnight, featuring one-of-a-kind art displays from all artist-alums of the University of the Arts, live entertainment, signature Art Basel cocktails, and bites from Tamara’s Bistro.

In 1968, artists Jeff Donaldson, Jae Jarrell, Wadsworth Jarrell, Barbara Jones-Hogu and Gerald Williams founded AfriCOBRA, which stands for African Commune of Bad Relevant Artists. 50 years later, the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami is celebrating the group’s 50thanniversary during Art Basel Miami Beach. This historic exhibition will explore the founders’ individual careers and the artists who exhibited with them between 1968-1973 as well as how AfriCOBRA’s philosophy manifested into their works as a group.AfriCOBRA will be on display at MOCA from Nov. 27, 2018 – April 7, 2019.

The Copper Door B&B is excited to launch its art series with “Wild Horses in Overtown: The Work of Purvis Young.” The exhibition pays homage to Purvis Young. Young, a longtime resident of Historical Overtown, used fluid lines and primary colors applied to distressed, used materials to capture the energy and soul of the streets in which he lived and the neighborhood of where The Copper Door Bed and Breakfast now resides. “Education as the Practice of Freedom,” curated by Project for Empty Space’s Jasmine Wahi. Join YoungArts for a guided breakfast tour of the exhibition, inspired by bell hooks’ book that examines the purpose of education through the lens of intersectionality and featuring 20 works—from painting and collage to mixed media and sculpture—by alumni from 1987 through today.

Jonathan Desrosiers will be exhibiting his art pieces at Zenith Art & Fashion, a Miami-based gallery, couture boutique and event space that is fusing art and fashion this Basel. The gallery will also be participating at Red Dot Miami, a modern and contemporary art show in the heart of Miami featuring an international slate of 75+ galleries showing over 500 leading artists. The gallery will be bringing together the artistic creations of emerging and established artists and fashion designers from around the world. With a mission of uniting cultures through the arts, Zenith will be exhibiting the works of 11 diverse artists from different nationalities.
