Miami Juneteenth Events You Need to Experience This Week

Above: The Adrienne Arscht Center’s Juneteenth celebration on June 16 features singer LaVie.

Black people have been working tirelessly to increase awareness of Juneteenth. Juneteenth is being celebrated across the United States more than ever before, with the occasion becoming a federal holiday on June 17, 2021. Emancipation in Florida (where Sugarcane is established) took place in Tallahassee on May 20, 1865, 11 days after the Civil War ended and two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the initial proclamation. South Florida is making its mark by celebrating Black Americans’ independence in the United States. Please take the time to look through this guide and locate events to commemorate this historic day.
