Art Basel, the preeminent fair for Modern and contemporary art, has unveiled details for its 2024 edition in Miami Beach, scheduled for December 6-8, with exclusive VIP preview days on December 4-5. Under the direction of Bridget Finn, making her debut at the helm, the fair will feature 283 galleries from 38 countries, with a significant emphasis on the Americas. Over two-thirds of the exhibitors are based in the region, reflecting Miami Beach’s unique position as a cultural hub, with participants from the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Brazil, and Argentina.
For this edition, Art Basel will highlight a range of artistic media, including paintings, sculptures, installations, photography, and films, with works by both up-and-coming artists and established names. The fair’s traditional sectors will return, including Galleries, Kabinett, Nova, Positions, Survey, and Meridians, each providing distinct spaces for exhibitors to showcase their collections.
Finn, a former director at Casey Kaplan Gallery in New York, is poised to refresh the fair’s artistic program, with the addition of a new curator in Meridians and the largest influx of new exhibitors in over a decade. Thirty-four galleries will make their debut, with 30 appearing in the main sector for the first time. Newcomers include Gallery Baton from Seoul, Jan Kaps from Cologne, and Pearl Lam Galleries from Hong Kong and Shanghai.
The Meridians section, now in its fifth year, will be curated by Yasmil Raymond, a former director at Frankfurt’s Hochschule für Bildende Künste Städelschule. The 2024 iteration will feature 18 large-scale works, many created specifically for the fair, addressing themes like democracy and climate change. Featured artists include Rachel Feinstein, Alice Aycock, and Peruvian artist Roberto Huarcaya.
In Kabinett, over 20 galleries will present curated mini-exhibitions, featuring both historical and contemporary works. Among the highlights are the American Abstract Expressionist painter Franz Kline and Cuban-born sculptor Zilia Sanchez.
As in previous years, Art Basel Miami Beach is expected to attract a broad spectrum of international collectors, curators, and art enthusiasts. Beyond the convention center, a slate of exhibitions and events will take place across Miami, reinforcing the city’s status as a global art destination. A standout will be the debut of Times Square Arts’ Midnight Moment program, which will showcase video works by 30 artists projected nightly on Miami Beach’s SoundScape Park.
Finn emphasized that the fair is committed to maintaining the highest level of quality in both exhibitors and the artworks presented, aiming to create an unparalleled experience for both seasoned collectors and new visitors.
